For most of my life, newspapers and flyers were placed on the front porch, very close the front door. I used to get ticked when it had snowed and the carrier left the paper on the side of the door with the hinges. You’d have to put one foot in the snow and reach around the door to grab the paper. These days, I’d be happy if they put it anywhere within reach. About two years ago, it became the norm to just leave it at the end of the driveway. Not just newspapers, but flyers too. In fact, the flyer carrier drives down the street with the car window open and just fires it onto each driveway. Not to get philosophical, but if the “delivery” is unsolicited and it’s been left at the end of your driveway, isn’t that technically littering and not a delivery at all?
In the warmer months, an early morning stroll to the end of the driveway is not so bad. But in the winter, the temperature is the easy thing to deal with. The hard part is deciphering if it is even out there. Is in the snow? Is it under the car? I have to go to different windows at the front of the house to get a view from all possible angles before I flick the outside lights on and begin the hunt. Not how I pictured starting my day. So, this is really about having a service ethic. Whatever it is you do, do it in the best way possible.
